Artist Statement and CV
I use sculpture to explore and question the complexities of the world we live in, serving as a tool to delve into the inherent contradictions of human nature. Exploring the connection between power, history and the natural world. My work is tied to thematic touchstones of myths, nature, fashion, design and literature. Also weaving personal experiences through the lens of feminist comradeship and an element of surrealism. I aim to create a dialogue between the visceral and the constructed within the pieces.
I predominantly work in clay because I enjoy its tactile nature, the direct contact with my hand or the simplest tools, it is malleable and yet holds the finest of details. Our instinctive knowledge of how to work this material offers an unbroken connection to ancient techniques through hand-building.
Within my art practice I remain open to explore, if I am drawn to materials or found objects based on their associative connotations, I utilise these qualities.
